2021 Barossa Boy 'Young Wisdom' Mataro

Mataro is often regarded as the backbone of Barossa winemaking. Usually blended with other varieties such as Shiraz and Grenache, it bestows spice, depth and roundness. The character-laden grapes of a particular, dry-grown old vineyard inspired the Barossa Boy Young Wisdom Mataro. The first vintage, 2016 , was an outstanding vintage for Mataro; a harvest that demanded stand-alone respect and the catalyst for the launch of Barossa Boy.

Barossa Boy honours the old wisdom of vines that have outlasted decades of varying weather and varietal fads. We add fresh perspective, highlighting this quiet achiever. Young Wisdom Mataro, created only in exceptional vintages, tells its own unique Barossa story.

Vintage Summary

The 2021 vintage was outstanding in many ways. Excellent growing conditions and a mild summer led to perfect ripening across most varieties. These conditions have made the 2021 red wines intense, rich and balanced fin both flavour and colours; Overall a high-yielding vintage with high-quality fruit.

Maturation

Fermented in small oak for 15 days prior to pressing. The wine was then returned to the same barrels for maturation over 23 months in 100% French Oak. This wine is unfined and unfiltered.

Tasting Notes

Intense blueberry aroma and flavours with subtle hints of violets. On the palate, elegant cinnamon spice and woody overtones take over. The wine finishes with rich dark berry flavours and silky tannins that will age well for many years. Pair with American style BBQ Short ribs.
